Mission

Post 8870 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States have a rich tradition of enhancing the lives of millions through community service programs and special projects. From providing assistance to the families of soldiers on active duty, supporting military units deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, assisting veterans in  the State’s veterans homes, and supporting a wide range of veterans issues the VFW is there — “honoring the dead by helping the living.”

At every meeting the preamble of the VFW’s Congressional Charter is recited.  This is a constant reminder of our mission and our focus as a veterans’ organization:

The purpose of this corporation shall be fraternal, patriotic, historical, charitable and educational; to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead, and to assist their widows and orphans; to maintain true allegiance to the Government of the United States of America, and fidelity to its Constitution and laws; to foster true patriotism; to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom; and to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies, whomsoever.
