DESCRIPTION:September 9 – Tour of USS Shoup – 0930 at Naval Station Everett. \nTour of USS Shoup (DDG86) Slated  \nThanks to a fortuitous contact by Post Member Phil Sacks\, the post has been invited to tour USS Shoup (DDG86)\, one of the Navy’s newer Arleigh Burke class destroyers by her commanding officer\, Commander Jason Rodgers\, USN. The tour is scheduled for Friday\, September 9 at Naval Station Everett . \nWe must limit attendance to a maximum of 50 and advance registration is required for security reasons. An email will be going out to all members of the post with a form attached which attendees must fill out and return. Registrations will be accepted on a first come first served basis. We plan on an 0930 arrival in Everett and the tour takes about an hour and half. \nFor parking\, the Alfa parking lot located next to the Main Gate is where everyone would park. We would be met there. It’s about a 10 minute stroll to the ship from there. Car pools are recommended. If there are personnel that would require transport to the ship\, it can be made available. \nAccess for disabled veterans is extremely limited. There are no access ramps and unless disabled persons are able to walk\, the tour is almost nonexistent. That said\, if their desire is simply to come aboard a US Navy Ship\, we can figure out a way to accommodate that. \nSome ship safety notes: close-toed shoes are required. The tour does transit up and down steep ladderwells and there will be a fair bit of walking. \nUSS Shoup is named for General David Shoup\, UCMC\, a World War II veteran who was awarded the Medal of Honor and whose final service was as Commandant of the Marine Corps. She is presently at sea for training exercise with the Pacific Fleet and allied navies and is expected home in Everett in mid August.

SUMMARY:Flag Day
DESCRIPTION:Flag Day is June 14 and celebrates the official symbol for the United States: our Stars and Stripes. Flag Day was first recognized by Congress on June 14\, 1777\, which became know as Flag Day. \nNot only is the U.S. flag older than the Union Jack of Great Britain and the tri-color flag of France\, but also is the only flag to have been flown on the moon. \nCongress first stated that there should be a star and stripe for every state. Our first flag had 13 stars and 7 red and 6 white stripes. In 1794\, two new states were added and we had a flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes. By 1818 there were 20 states\, but our county was still using the flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes. Congress thought about having 20 stripes and agreed that it might become a problem because of its size so they passed a law that said there would be 13 stripes for the original 13 states\, and they would add a star for each new state that joined the union. \nThe U.S. flag is 13 stripes: seven red and six white. A blue field with 50 stars is located next to the staff in the upper left corner of the flag. It extends from the top to the lower edge of the fourth red stripe. The stars are arranged in alternating rows of six and five representing the 50 states of the United States. The stars do not represent any given state. \nThe colors used in the flag give special meaning to the flag: Red for valor and zeal; white for hope and cleanliness of life; and blue — the color of heaven — for reverence and loyalty. \nThe stars are an ancient symbol of the heavens. Our flag’s 50 stars represent each state as part of the nation\, but also a separate level of government. Our federal government was not given the power to control\, so that each state would be able to govern themselves in those things they could do better. When you are looking at the flag\, you are looking at the magnificent history of all Americans who have lived before us\, your own ancestors\, the most enduring nation of free people that has ever existed. \nfrom VFW.org \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The Edmonds Memorial Cemetery will be having their 34th annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Memorial Day itself\, Monday\, May 30\, at 11:00 AM. This year—as in years past—Post 8870 will be presenting the colors\, raising the flag\, narrating the White Table Ceremony and other prominent duties. Our Voice of Democracy winner will read her winning essay. All post members are asked to attend. \nWe will have further details about this events in future newsletters\, but for now\, please mark your calendars and set the time aside to attend.

DESCRIPTION:Memorial Day Poppy Distribution\, Memorial Day Weekend – sign up with Bob Crawford \nIf you have yet to sign up for poppy distribution be sure to see Bob Crawford at the Post Meeting this\nmonth and make a commitment to help at one of our locations on one or both days. Friday\, May 28 or Sat\, May 29. \nThere will be a new wrinkle in the event this year\, as we will also have raffle tickets available for sale to\nsupport our Veterans Plaza and information on how families can honor individual veterans through the plaza. \nVirtually all of the money our Post Relief Committee uses to fund Veteran’s and community causes such as aiding homeless vets\, supporting the Washington State Veterans homes\, scholarships and other activities comes from our poppy distribution event.
