Amos “Tad” Chapman served aboard the USS Killen, a Fletcher Class Destroyer that played an important role in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The Killen provided fire support for troops ashore, silencing three Japanese artillery positions. The Killen also engaged the enemy ships contesting the landing at Leyete, disabling the Japanese battleship Yamashiro.
