It Happened at the December Post Meeting

It was a busy, if efficient December Post meeting, with a fascinating speaker in the person of Col. Bill Reeder and presentations as shown below, following which a sizable contingent retired to the Edmonds City Council Meeting in support of the Edmonds Veterans Plaza vote, details of which are covered on another post. We should all be very proud of our active and dedicated membership.

Representatives of VFW (Terry Crabtree) and American Legion (Jim Collins) present checks to Mike Reagan to support Mike’s Fallen Heroes Project. Mike has drawn portraits of well over 4,000 of our fallen comrades to date.

December Post Meeting

Sarah Browne presented a check from Spaulding Ski Bus in memory of Jim Harkness. Jim’s wife Dorothy has long been part of the ski bus project and the Post long a beneficiary.

Our December Speaker, Bill Reeder, author of Through the Valley, in which he related his experience as a POW held captive in jungle prison camps as well as the “Plantation” and the “Hanoi Hilton”. Mike Reagan presented a portrait of Ken Hicks to his daughter, Melissa Hicks at the December Post Staff Meeting. Ken, a Vietnam Veteran, passed away in July. (Ken and your editor were inducted into the post at the same meeting)

Raffle Winners Announced

As part of the Post contribution to the funding of the Edmonds Veterans Plaza, a rafffle was conducted over the past two months with tickets sold by post members & friends of the post, for which Mike Reagan provided prizes in the form of two of his wonderful renderings of Seahawks scenes.

The drawing to determine the two winners was held at the Post picnic on July 4. At left is Reagan and incoming Post Commander Terry Crabtree, presenting the first prize to Jim McCann, center right and second prize to Rene Blumenfeld center left.

The raffle raised over $2,600.00 for the Plaza project, which has now reached and exceeded the estimated project cost.

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone who participated!

Sept.Speaker Dean Olson
Sept. Speaker Dean Olson

Dean Olson joined us to speak about the need for volunteers to assist people with hearing disabilities at the Edmonds Waterfront Center, one of the many programs offered at the EWC. If you missed his presentation and are interested in this program, contact Olson at [email protected]

At age 4, Olson began experiencing minor hearing loss that ultimately progressed until — as an adult — he became profoundly deaf, requiring bilateral cochlear implants. Olson serves as president of Washington State Communication Access and was instrumental in getting a Senate bill passed in the State legislature requiring closed-captions on televisions in all places of public accommodation in Washington state – which was unanimously adopted and signed by Gov. Jay Inslee May 10, benefiting people who are hearing impaired.

March Post Meeting

March Post Meeting

No speaker having been scheduled for the March meeting, Commander Kurfess went straight to our business meeting. Aside from the usual officers reports, during which everything was reported to be in order, considerable time was devoted to planning for Buddy Poppy distribution for Memorial Day, as well as our participation in the Memorial Day observance at the cemetery (we are also planning a brief event at the Veterans Plaza, after the Cemetery ceremonies) We also briefly discussed logistics for resuming our participation in the “Edmonds Kind of 4th” celebration.

We were pleasantly surprised to find Past Commander Fred Apgar attending in person and as you can see from the photo, Fred was kind enough to fill the Jr Vice Commander Chair for Past Commander Rose Gilliland who was unable to attend.

Despite living now in Savannah, GA, Fred frequently attends our Post meetings via Zoom, regularly contributes book reviews of interest to this newsletter and in many ways is a more active member than some local residents.

Always good to see you, Sir!

January Post Meeting

Membership Chair Jim Traner announced a new potential member, David Wells, a USN veteran of 1968-70, who we hope to be able to induct at the February meeting.

Data from the old Plaza kiosk is in the process of being transferred to the Post Web site.

Poppy Chair Duane Bowman is proposing some changes in our site set-up which will be discussed at the next staff meeting for further announcements at the Post meeting in February.

The Post needs some volunteers in leadership & committee roles:

  1. A VFW jacket Committee to help in ordering new Post jackets for members
  2. Safety/Law Enforcement Committee to select Law Enforcement & Fire Fighter of the year awardees.
  3. Identify and invite potential Post meeting speakers.
  4. Reach out to older and ill veterans to check on their status.
  5. The Edmonds VA Clinic is now open
  6. Veterans pins available at Heroes Cafe
  7. Planning is underway for Memorial Day ceremonies at Edmonds Cemetery.

Talk to the commander if you are interested in any of these activities.

WWII Marine Corps Vet Dies at 100

WWII Marine Corps Vet Dies at 100

Clara Jennings, who served in the US Marine Corps during World War II, died just days after her 100th birthday, which was January 27. While not herself a member of VFW, she was the mother in law of member Dick Harsin, one of our Vietnam Navy veterans. The family has requested donations to be made to VFW Post 8870 in her honor.

Many were honored with the opportunity to meet Jennings at the 2019 Veterans Day Ceremony at the Edmonds Veterans Plaza, where this photo was taken.

Korean War Vets Honored with Medal

Consul Lee presenting the medal

As we were planning for the dedication of the Veterans Plaza information kiosk, Heidi Audette, of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs called to ask if we might have a Memorial Day Ceremony planned at which the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal could be presented to eligible Korean War Vets. The result was to turn a relatively low key dedication to one much more widely attended and that allowed us to join the Republic of Korea General Consul’s office in honoring twenty some veterans with the medal.

Said Audette; “I wanted to take a moment to thank you and the members of Post 8870 for your generosity and hospitality during Monday’s ceremony! The Consul General’s Office and WDVA are very grateful that you allowed the Ambassador for Peace Medals to be presented. You obviously have the support of your community and in turn you are providing great support to the veterans and families who call Edmonds home!

Thank you again, and I hope to have the opportunity to work with you again in the future!”
